If I were to have another downpipe built again, I would incorporate a
seperate pipe for the wastegate as you mentioned, but have it simply
point to the ground and not meet back up with the exhaust at all. A
bit loud( when the wastegate is open) and illegal, but no disturbance
to the primary exhaust at all, technically more area for the primary
exhaust to flow through, and cheaper.

Downpipes
Well, a compromise would be better for street use... with the waste gate
having a seperate pipe joining after at the rear of the dump pipe.
