Justin's Custom Exhaust.

My 3: system starts with a custom-built downpipe flange that fits a
slightly squashed 3" mandrel bent 90 degree pipe from JC Whitney. I had
ten of these flanges built and I have a few left. They cost $25 postage
paid. The mandrel bends cost around $60 for a pair including shipping.

Sometimes when I'm feeling naughty, I go to the street where the
twentysomethings with hot imports go cruising and I tease them with my
exhaust note and little busrts of acceleration. Just so that you can
envision it, I am 47 years old, fat , with a full beard. In about
twenty attempts at engaging the hottest looking cars I can find, I have
yet to have a Honda or Mitsubishi driver show me what his car can do.
Except for the bigger than normal hood scoop, my car looks plain Jane.
I think the exhaust note says it all.

Incidentally, I do not believe in drag racing Subarus. I think hot
Subarus should be road-going versions of rally cars and drag racing one,
especially from a standing start, makes about as much sense as hauling
firewood in a Porsche. A decent clutch for my car costs about $600 plus
installation, so I'm not willing to smoke it doing a hole shot to beat
some premature ejaculator in a lowered Honda.

Meanwhile, back at exhaust...
While I would never dream of running catless, I had the opportunity to
test drive a car that was identical to mine in every way, except that
its owner had "sleeved" his stock cat. This man's car was measurably
faster and measurably louder than mine. His car spooled very quickly
and had instant throttle response with great low end.

Amen, Bill. The kings of drag racing are Top Fuelers, and I don't
think anyone would argue that those cars are worthless at doing
anything but going straight for 5 seconds. Our cars are much more
than that, so drag racing is a sorry way to treat your car, and judge
it's performance.

Hi Bill, do you still has those custom-built downpipe flange on your
hand? I would like to get one for my car ( I haven't do anything on
the exhaust eventhough I put a AVC-R on it). Now my emission test will
be on test next month and I would like to modify my exhaust after it
(in Toronto, we have to do an emission test every 2 years, after it I
have 2 year trouble free)
I know one of the Shop could do an custom exhaust for $450 from
Downpipe to muffler but the shop is very busy I don't know when will
they have time to work on my car and they told me have to leave the
car for a week.
