I need some reccomended approaches... just bgt ej22 (1992 na) long block from import salvage yard for a flying project. What I know; 103,000 miles, supposedly running when pulled by this reputable yard. Oil looks very clean, intake and fuel injectors are in place as is harmonic balancer, and all covers. No exhaust manifold, no ecu, harness was cut for deinstallation. My plans are to purchase an aftermarket programmable ecu, igniters and shortened harness and use the existing fuel injection / intake. I am fine with the stock 130 h.p., but want to take the necessary steps to partially disassemble, check, rebuild, replace, clean, grind etc. the heads, valves, springs, rings, bearings, etc.. I have most Subaru engine manuals on hand. I want to do only what is necessary to have a good servicable engine, but not a lot of expensive upgrades as it is not necessary to increase horsepower substantially. The obvious things to me are to replace piston rings, connecting rod bearings? and have the heads cleaned and replace gaskets. What should a basic rebuild consist of? Should I get a starter and test the compression before I jump in? Any ideas of a reasonable approach to spending maybe a few hundred up to a max of say $700.00 to have a good, sound block. I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks.

I just replace the gaskets, water pump, timing belt, and tensioner, as the bottom ends on these in stock form are tanks. I ripped an abused 150k mile motor down and it was in excellent condition. The bottom end bearings probably would have done another 100k and the cams looked almost new. Being that it's going into an airplane, I'd do the bearings anyway and the pistons skirts can get scuffed up, too, so I'd think about that as well. Rods are forged so they might be fine for you.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
Sounds good
If the compression checks out within specs, should I still then replace pistons and rings, just rings or neither, realizing that I will split the case and replace the bearings anyway. What kind of visual wear should I look for on the pistons for them to pass muster? What are the things I should look for that may need replaced inside the block. Thanks for the input on gaskets, timing belt and confirming what I thought about replacing main bearings.
What type of treatment for the valves, springs, hydrolic lifters or whatever it has would be wise. Do I clean any of this with a wire wheel on a bench grinder. I am sure you can tell that I am no mechanic (deh), but I love to learn and take pride in doing a good job. If I have the heads ground down a bit, will that increase compression and is that recommended as well? I know I am asking a lot of questions. So thanks for indulging me.
