Stalls when cold, idles fine after only 1min warmup.

Post by vica153 »

Short version:

When cold, it starts fine, but where it would usually hover around 1700rpm until warmed up, it now gradually drops lower and lower and stalls in a matter of 3-4 seconds.

Tapping the throttle keeps the engine running easily enough and after only a minute or so, the temp gauge hasn't really moved, it will idle fine at 1500 or so.

It seems to run/drive fine. No CELs. Problem arose after rinsing parts of engine. Checked/dried spark plugs & main electrical connectors. 93 EJ22T.

More info:

If the engine gets fully warmed up, turned off, and then sits for a while but not long enough fully cool down, it will start and idle fine immediately.

Last week I had the turbo off and after reinstalling it ran fine for a week or so.(although a did not drive a much in that week, there were 0 issues)

The problem arose after I decided I should rinse off the crossmember/exhaust area from spillage when I took the turbo off. I tried to be careful and used minimal water, but still managed to get water into the spark plug holes.

That was pretty much to be expected and I figured I'd just clean them out and it be fixed..nope stall

A few months ago I sprayed down the entire engine bay with cleaner/pressure washer with little to no regard for the electronics. I planned on cleaning out the plugs and drying everything off, but after minimal drying and without cleaning out the plug holes, it started and ran without issue. So I am puzzled how this careful and minimal use of a very low pressure hose managed to mess something up.

I did not start the car for a day or 2 after rinsing it and now I wonder if that may have been the cause of my current issue. :(

I'll check more connectors/hoses tomorrow. It really seems temperature related.

If you have compressed air, you can try blowing air into the spark plug holes and boots.

To be quite honest, the problem kind of sounds like a coolant temp sensor....

Maybe you should check the wiring going to the coolant temp sensor. It may have some wire exposed.

The problem did not happen again today. I guess it may have been some water sitting on a connector. I'll look over everything again for exposed wires.
