Snow tires and valve lash adjusters

Snow Tires

Blilzzaks are a bit better for glare ice, while Michelin Arctic Aplins are a bit better on dry pavement. I like my Michelins, as they are a minimal sacrafice when the roads are bare and dry or just wet. I hate studs on an AWD hotrod, as I like to drive around pretty close to the limits of adhesion in the winter and studs get torn out by sliding around.

Valve Lash Adjusters

Hydraulics are great for up to about 6500 RPM, as they are self adjusting, cushiony and fairly idiot-proof. I don't know whether is is possible or practical to switch an EJ22T to solids. What is the valve train on the legendary Byron's EJ22T screamer?

I think it costs a lot to convert an EJ20G to solids through conventional channels. Let's hear from our readers in UK, OZ NZ etc on this subject. I have had good luch with getting fairly extensive modifications from local head rebuilding shops. I had the head done on an 84 Dodge (Mitsibishi) Colt (Lancer) turbo and they eliminated those pesky problematic MCA Jet valves for a nominal fee. Someday when I am feeling ambitious, I will take the damaged head off one of my EJ20G engines and see if a head shop would have a way of converting it to solids.

I noticed that the new USA WRX has quad cams, but the sales-kid couldn't answer my questions about cam followers. My son's 98 RS 2.5 has quad cams and soid lifters, but his heads say NA, which means that it is specifically a non-turbo head. I guess it took me a few hundred words to say that I don't know bear shit from apple butter, oh well.....

mmmmm, apple butter.

AVO Turbo in Australia used to, if they don't still, make a solid
lifter conversion kit for EJ20G's. This is the kit (plus cams) that
gave big top end power increases in the EJ20 buildup I posted a while
back. For info on the new WRX, go to www.imprezawrx.com This is
specific for the US version.

I have Michelin Arctic Aplins on my Jetta and have found them to be very good, but i just but Perelli Snow + Ice on my Legacy and they are great, might be because they are new with AWD behind them but my Legacy is like a little tank with ;them .

I pushed through 16 inchhes of snow last weekend, it made an interesting trail in the snow.

I spoke to someone at subaru uk and they told me that the first legacy turbo,s could have a warranty recall to have new heads put on due to extream valve nosie/and sticking, thease were infact wrx heads. Also a common mod for the rally guys building ej20 motors was to use bottom end from legacy and top end from wrx. This was said to be the best combo

Snow tires and valve lash adjusters

I don't think that this story is quite right... my understanding of it, is
that this applies to BG5 (twin turbo, second generation Legacy) and the
story goes like this.

In late 93 when the BG5A was released, there was the GT (160kW) and GT-B
Spec (185kW) with WRX style heads and hydraulic lifters. In late 96 to early
96 the GTB Spec became the GT-B (BG5B EJ20H) and the power was pushed to
(205kW) and still used hydraulic lifters.... apparently there were many
engine failures and warranty replacements.

The quick fix was to use forged pistons from STi and the heads from the WRX
(solid lifters) which created the EJ20R. The WRX or twin turbo heads are a
big improvement on the BC-BF, they bolt straight on to and EJ20G and are far
less restrictive in the intake port / valve guide area.
