Which power steering lines will fit 97 EJ20G/K?

Post by kimokalihi »

I removed the lines on my 91SS pump and was going to try to mount them to my new engine, a 97 Forester motor from Japan. EJ20G or some say it's basically an EJ20K, I don't know the difference.

The lines are completely different and won't reach the pump with the 91SS lines. I'm pretty sure the 91SS pump won't work on this engine due to the under the manifold intake.

Is there another year/model that has similar power steering lines to this forester motor? The stock lines are cut.

Don't worry...the lines will reach with a little re-bending, and yes you can use the EJ22T pump and mounting bracket, although you'll have to use the reservoir from the EJ20K pump. See my build thread, that's precisely what I did.

Actually I think I saw your build thread. Or somebodys thread who modified their pump to clear an under the manifold intake. I was thinking about this myself when taking these pictures.

I thought maybe, just maybe I could use my stock pump with the resevoir from the forester pump. I just wasn't sure how to remove them to swap them.

I'll check out your thread.

What did you use to bend the lines? I tried doing it with some needle nose pliers but it wasn't working well so I stopped.

I took the pressure line off and clamped it in a vise to bend it...it's made of pretty tough steel. The return line didn't take much tweaking thanks to the rubber line going to the top of the pump.

The reservoir's not hard to swap either. Once you take the top off of the EJ20K reservoir, you can see the 2 bolts that hold it on to the pump itself...the EJ22 pump has these 2 bolts running through the whole reservoir. Get a new O-ring if you do this though! ;)

Where do I get the O Ring from? I'm pretty sure I HAVE to do this lol. I don't see what other choice I have unless a WRX with under the manfiold intake will have the right setup.

Little update. I ordered the ORing from my local subaru dealer.

Then today I was working on my car replacing the brand new axles with torn boots. Swapped in the axles that came with my engine swap and then I noticed this:

The passenger side power steering rack boot is torn all the way around and has shot out all the grease all over everything down there. I thought (and was hoping) that all this grease was just from the original axles that came with the car which also had torn boots but unfortunately I was wrong. It was both the axles and the power steering rack.

The driver side looks OK although is covered in what I imagine is grease from the driverside axle boot. It does look old and worn though and starting to deterioate and I'm sure will crack sooner or later and shoot more grease all over everything again.

So now that leaves me with the question of what the hell do I do now?

Do I replace the whole rack or just the boots? If so, what rack can I use? Is there a rack that would reach around this DOHC engine better like a WRX rack or STI?

Not sure what you mean by "reach around better". Subaru steering racks are designed the same.

Those inner boots are for the inner tie rod ends. If it were me, I'd get new boots and inner tie rods and call it a day.

I had a small tear in the rack boot on the pass side on the impreza. I cleaned things up and slapped a new boot on there. The main concern with dirt in the rack is the seals, and from your picture it looks like there may be a little leakage.

I'd probably clean things up and slap a new boot on if things looked ok.

I'm talking about the power steering lines reaching the pump. When I put the DOHC EJ20G in there they do not reach around the heads to the power steering pump anymore. The heads are too big.

I was thinking maybe a WRX with DOHC motor would have a rack with lines that were designed with similar heads that would fit better. But I just remembered I think WRX is a slower steering rack than ours so maybe that's not the best idea either.

I'll check and see how much the boots and tie rod ends are. I'm afraid I'll get the lengths wrong on the tie rods when I'm adjusting them. Won't that leave me with a shitty alignment? Or is there any need to adjust them when you get new ones?

Is there seals I can replace on the rack to make sure it's not leaking when I do this?

Yeah but it kind of looks like you may have rebent the EJ22T lines to fit.

Also, which year/model has those long ass spark plug wires? I have two sets that don't fit that are new. That I wasted money on. One was like a 96 outback and they don't reach. Only ones that reach were the old ones that came with the motor which I'm using for now but they almost don't reach either.

Of course I bent the EJ22 lines to fit...I posted that in this thread already! :) I only showed you a pic for reference. As far as I know you can't just 'buy' lines that will fit your JDM motor. You could piece something together out of AN fittings, adapters and braided line, but it would cost a small fortune and look like ass. Bending your existing lines takes about a half hour and costs nothing.

My plug wires are for a 1996 Outback EJ25D motor, specifically produced from 6/96 on. The NGK part number is FX54.

The NGK FX54 is what I am going to use with my ej257/20k heads. I get my wire sets from http://www.clubplug.net/

And, I have the 20k power steering reservoir with pump and hoses.

Will your hoses bolt up to my rack? I've got the resevoir already. Do you have any pictures of these hoses?

Found the NGK FX54 on Amazon for $46 + Free shipping. The place you linked wants $10 for shipping.

Then amazon charged me tax so it came out to $50 shipped lol. I still saved $5 and that's without knowing if the other place charges tax or not.

I found the part numbers for the boots and tie rod ends and it's going to cost $130 shipped just for those. That's crazy. I could buy a whole rack in good condition for less than that probably.
