KW at the wheels?

Post by Tommy Moffitt »

Why..... if the EJ20 on a wrx is rated at 160kw do they only put out around
86kw give or take?
Now I realise that the 160kw is taken from the fly wheel? and the 86kw is at
the wheels but that would equate to around 45-50% drive train loss? which is
a hell of a lot?

Any answers?

My wagon in re3latively stock trim (apexi pod filter, rest stock) put out
95.2kw at the front wheels? which is not that much considering I should have
(correct me if im wrong) a car putting out 160bhp which should eqaute to
roughly 119-120kw at the wheels?

Help?

AWD transmission loss is about 30%, as opposed to 12% for RWD.... which is
the fundamental reason why Subaru's get annihilated at the drag strip or
tarmac circuits by Nissan 200SX, etc....unless it is raining of course!

That sounds about right...you have to remember there is much power loss through the 4WD system.

Last time I had my car tested on a dyno, it showed 173kW at the
flywheel and 137kW at the wheels, then we changed the exhaust and the
result was 192kW/154kW. That's roughly a 20% loss...
