fuel economy went down the shitter

Post by 91White-T »

I used to get decent mileage (16-17 average), but lately its been way down. I think its probably the cats which have never been changed (165K+), but I'm not really sure, so does anyone know what else it could be?

Are there any codes being thrown?

Could be an O2 sensor, spark plugs, wires . . .

have you raised your boost with some type of boost controler. I ran a boost controler for a couple weeks at about 11psi and among other things I got very poor mileage. I beleive that the stock ecu does not respond well to raising the boost without other revisions for many reasons. but this is only my opinion and I'm sure others here might disagree.

I dunno, what's the usual mpg for this car?

I'm seeing ~20mpg.

20 mpg is not too bad....considering I have a n/a and routinely get between 21-25 in the city

That's even with only bein FWD......but I have a POS auto to zap all the power up.

That's the best I can get, driving normally with occasional WOT acceleration . . . If I really run it, mpg goes down to something like 15-17mpg.

Legacy777, what are the weight differences between the AWD and FWD platforms? Auto to auto and manual to manual . . . does the AWD add that much weight?

And what is the REAL curb weight of these cars? I've seen anything from 2900lbs(!!!!) to 3100lbs.

With everything in my car that I have.....and with an empty tank and me in the car. I'm like at 3025 something. With full gas and me it's like 3200.

I went to a truck scale and weighed ;)

With the speaker box out and other stuff, and me not in....car would probably be under 2900 with an empty tank of gas.

I can get you the curb weights from the FSM when I get home......remind me if I forget.....

I think AWD adds about 250lbs auto or manual. That's why someone that wants outright acceleration on the highway or something might want FWD...

I think the 4WD is worth its weight penalty in handling prowess, but I do sometimes wish I had FWD so I could just go a little faster...

That curb weight sounds about right...

I used to get almost 18 even with my MBC set at 11psi, so thats probably not it, but I am getting a CEL every once in a while, it only stays on a few seconds, and I just replaced the plugs not long ago. I was hopin to hear that it is the cats so that I have another reason to get a custom exhaust made...

What plugs did you use? My car ran crappy with itermittant CEs with the set of boschs that were on the car. I changed them out for ngk v-coppers 1 heat range colder and the problem disappeared . . .

Bosch platinums are good for only two things in these cars: lasting a long time, and drinking your gas... I had some for about 3 months, no performance, and terrible gas mileage...

Curb weight for the 1992 turbo legacy is:

MT: 3,140 lb
AT: 3,220 lb

That's with the weight of the power door lock, power window, air conditioner, cruise control, abs, cassette player and sunroof.
