Radiator Fan Wiring?

Post by skid542 »

I'm starting to wrap up my changes to the main wiring loom in the engine compartment and will be soon looking to get my radiator and fans mounted. I'm using a nice alumimum radiator with two low profile fans. My problem is the fans have two wires, and the harness has three. Looking through the FSM's, I know that there is a subfan wiring which I assume is primarily for the AC control. But I'm not seeing anythng that indicates which pins are for the sub fan and which ones are the primary.

So, which wires do I need to cut and splice a new connector into so when the ECU says the motor's hot it turns on my fans? Any help/input would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The stock fans have an extra 12v lead on them to increase speed. The stock wiring can be kind of tricky with the AC system.

If you do not have the AC system, then really all you need to find is the ground and the switched lead coming from the ECU.

Did you do any trimming of the stock harness?

Here's a diagram from the 92 fsm

and the ac diagram

Thanks Josh. BTW - the link to the 92 FSM diagram takes me to the drivetrain sticky thread ;). I've got it downloaded at home though so I'll check it out. The AC diagram definately helps though.

I don't have AC anymore so I'll do some electrical testing and track down the switched lead. Should I do anything with the extra 12v lead or just leave it alone? I'm assuming it's just another +12v wire?

And yes, I've trimmed back the stock harness a fair bit. I've long since gotten rid of cruise control and I'm getting rid of the ABS system. Combine all those wires with the wires for the AT tranny connector and it's a lot of junk that makes a clutter of my engine bay and makes it difficult to run wires where I want to. So I completely de-loomed the engine bay harness back to the firewall and am re-doing it. It also makes it easier to run the wires for my engine management. Should clean up the engine bay significantly.

Sorry about that. Fixed it.

Yeah it's pretty much just an extra 12v lead. I'd suggest just testing to make sure either both or one has 12v all the time when the fan relay is engaged. Just tie that one to the new fans you have.
