Roller Rockers in the 22t head?

Post by sobe_death »

Is a retrofit of the later SOHC Rocker arms into the ej22t heads possible? Even if not, what is the engine code I should be looking for for these phase II heads?

thanks,

I'm not certain whether installing roller rockers into a non-roller head is possible, but I would be inclined to say no. The cams are different, that I do know. Also, the no-roller cams have oil holes on the lobes to lubricate the followers.
The changeover to roller heads took place in the '96 model year, I believe.

From what I have been able to gather the roller rockers were in the 1.8 liter engines. It would also take a cam reprofile in order to work with the roller rockers unless the 1.8 cams would bolt right in and had the same specs. I would like to know where I could find the specs for the cams of the 2.2, 2.2t, and the 1.8. I suspect there are differences.

Rollers started in 95. Single port exhaust started in 96, though I'm not sure if they changed the rest of the head casting when they did that.

I ran a 95 head on one side, and a 92 head on the other of one of my motors for a while. Seemed to run fine, but I swapped the entire head, not just the rockers. I could take a look I guess, I burned the valves out of that head too.

I could help out with this. I'd need cam samples, though. I have a set of 22E cams I could spec, but would need 22T and EJ18 cams to check. I know that the profiles are different between the roller and non-roller 22E cams.

Interesting. I can understand why the roller followers would work w/ the non-roller cam, but you should probably keep an eye on the cam and follower wear in non-roller-followers-on-roller-cam heads. Roller cams don't have oil holes in the lobes to lube the followers.

I just acquired a set of roller rockers from a 95 1.8 Impreza that was at the pick and pull. All I want to do to the cams is put a roller profile on the stock cam with no change to duration etc. Delta said that would be an easy mod and would run $55 a cam. I just need to send them some cores to do it on.

Like deride said, my Motor has a stock setup on one the passenger side and the newer one on the drivers head. I did this because I thought I had a dead lifter and I just swapped the whole assembly I had laying around. I did this about 10-15K miles ago and have had no issues. When I pull those heads for the 25D dohc swap I'll see if anything looks weird.

I just unbolted the old one and swapped in the new one. I didn't adjust anything. there's not noticeable difference in anything.

I would really like to just drop the roller rockers in to place, but did some searching and reading. They would just bolt on, the only downside I have come up with is a slight loss of power. The valves spend less time at maximum lift by doing this. I don't know if it would be noticeable, but I think I will have Delta reprofile a set of cams to make everything copasetic, or however you spell that.

The nose of the cam keeps the valves at maximum lift while it sweeps across the pad of the rocker arm. The contact area is alot smaller with the roller rockers and thus less dwell time at max lift. The opening and closing ramps are alot steeper too which helps in this regard also.

It might be less expensive to find a set of factory roller cams. Unless you want a performance grind on them, that is.

The cars that came with the roller rockers were na cars and I am going to be putting them in a turbo. There should be some differences in the grinds. How much difference I don't know, but I did think of doing that. I am leaning toward having Delta convert the stock cams to a roller profile. I'm not really looking for a performance grind, just the stock profile compatible with the roller rockers.
