maybe an engine build...

Post by speedmaxx »

so I came across a 2001 sohc ej25 sortblock with 80k. the car was in an accident but i guess the motor ran well before it was pulled. is it worth picking up for $100? the guy was going to build a hc motor out of it but ended up swaping.

my current 2.2l is running strong but it does get abused and has about 135k on it. my plans are to put my 2.2 l heads on the 2.5 block for a hc motor. I have been searching for the past few days and im very confused lol

so is it an easy swap? is the wiring gonna be relativly easy? if it is an easy swap I will deffinatly pick it up but Im gonna have a page full of questions...

thanks

Wiring is going to be the real issue more than likely. The idle air control system is different. If you run the newer ECU, you'll have to add wiring. It's doable, but has its issues.

Okay that just shot my plans out the window lol

What year 2.5 would work? I'm looking for a direct drop in where I will be able to use my 2.2l heads and manifold along with most of my existing wiring.

For $100 it's worth buying just to sell.

If you're keeping the stock EJ22 heads, you'd be keeping the stock intake manifold as well. The only thing that might be different is the crank sensor, but you might be able to use the EJ22 pulley on the EJ25 crank.
Check out NASIOC (i know, i know) for frankenmotor builds. There is actually a decent amount of info on the swap. With the accompanying amount of typical flameage, but worth a look.

I've been searching but nobody has put in a newer style 2.5l motor, everyones running 95-99 phase 2 2.5l sohc with 2.2l heads

I'm just trying to do this with as little wiring as possible

'95-'99 is phase one.
Anyone know if a EJ22 crank pulley will work on a ph II EJ25?

Okay so a 01 2.5l short block will bolt right into my car as long as I use my 2.2l intake manifold and my 2.2l heads? Correct?

The crank pullys should all be the same, I'm pretty sure everything from 1990-2007 all use the same pully

The motor will physically bolt in, yes. The reason I ask about the crank pulley is the sensor. I think, if you can use the EJ22 crank pulley, everything else sensor/harness wise will work from the EJ22.

o i see... I put a perrin light weight pulley on my ej22

so I shouldent have to do anything special right? as long as Im using all my exsisting motor parts with 2.5l short block everything should work flawlessly.

will my headers bolt up to the new short block? also what should I be replacing on the 2.5l motor since it will be a whille before i acually swap it in. I was thinking timing belt, water pump, along with new headgasketss. anything else?

You'll definitely need headgaskets. Be sure to get the thicker ones. Timing belt tensioner is a good idea.
In theory, the ecu won't even know the difference, other than air consumption and fuel demands. Your butt dyno should notice, though.

It might be worth it to hit up your local u-pull-it junkyard to find some EJ22 heads and intake. They should be cheap enough and that way you can build the motor w/o having your car down.

Alright sounds good, I think I'm gonna go down tommorow and check it out hopefully pick it up. For hg I'm going with the ones from cosmetics because they make them for a 2.2/2.5 hybrid so they will drop right in.

Now I was also thinking having my cams done at delta, which cams do I need to use? The 2.2l or the 2.5

Cams match the heads, so you'd be keeping the 22cams, but we could do you up a 220 grind that would help to maximize the tq available from the swap. Unless you wanted to use aftermarket engine management, then you could go bigger.

What's the price runnig on the 220grinds?

I'm not sure if the guy still has the motor now, whatever 2.5l are all over the place here, there easy to come by
