need troubleshooting help, '93 Turbo Sedan

Post by tahiti350 »

We just got a '93 Turbo Sedan in at the wrecking yard I work at. It runs but is missing on #1 & #4 cylinders, doesn't sound like a compression issue. I think the injectors are dead.

Can I use non-turbo injectors just to make sure the motor is sound? I've got a couple of sets of red tops, and a set of grey tops out back....

get a long screw driver and put it on the top of each injector to hear if its firing.
Could be the timing has jumped which causes the injectors to not fire.
Checked the spark plug wiring?
soon as you pull an old injector out, very likely the o-rings will need to get replaced too.

Okay, found out the pink tops are much different than the red or grey's... swapped injectors around,m replaced plugs, ohm'd wires, and got it running on all but #4.

Checked compression, #1 is 157, #4 is 149, didn't check the other 2 since they were firing.

Also tried swapping the injector connecters between #2 & #4, and #4 picked up, but it dropped #2, so it looks like a driver problem in the computer??? It did run smoother with #4 firing....

Will an NA computer run a turbo motor, at least well enough to make sure the motor is sound?

also, I know the NA motors are stamped EJ22 under the alternator, does the turbo motor have an EJ22T??

okay, boss has a 'noid light that plugs into the injector harness, and there is no fire signal at that injector connector...

The EJ22T designation is not from Subaru; it's just a way to differentiate the NA vs. Turbo EJ22's that owners have made up, from what I've read. Pretty sure it just says EJ22 on top, just like the NA version.

NA and Turbo computers are different: cam/crank sensors are reversed, different MAF and the turbo has the additional turbo sensors, plus smaller injectors of the NA.... but they do share the same harness connectors.

I'm not following what you've tried, but you should get a CEL/ code if the injector/wiring is bad.

Nice find!

so far I've swapped injectors around, replaced plugs, ohm'd plug wires, and swapped #2 & #4 injector connectors. Also used the 'noid light to test the driver side injector connectors and one is firing, the other isn't...

I don't know if it's thowing any codes as the dash is inop. Someone hacked the dash harness, that's why it came to us... power window don't work, not sure what else is not working yet....

Overall the car is complete, appears to be a true factory turbo car. Had the turbo wheels, deck lid spoiler, different interior materials (maroon/burgandy exterior with black and grey interior). Would be a fixer/resale if I can figure out the wiring mess....

Just to confirm.....you got it running, all except #4. Then you swapped the #4 injector with the #2 injector and then #2 cylinder was dead? If so, it's the injector that is the problem. If I misunderstood you post, please let me know.

Or, did you swap the injector connectors? If you swapped the connectors, check to make sure you have 12v on one of the pins at the "dead" connector. Then I'd check the resistance of the other pin from the injector connector to the ECU. I'd suspect a wiring issue over a fried ECU.

Regarding the ej22 vs. the ej22t. The ej22t motor has some raised ribbing that was cast into the block. If you look at these two engines, you can notice it on the ej22t, but not the ej22.

Initially swapped injectors, no change, #4 still dead, then swapped connector, and #2 died, so not injector. Also tested it with a solenoid light, and there is no injector pulse signal.

If anyone has the '93 turbo wiring schematics bookmarked please send em a link.Boss wants this thing running right and I don't want to spend hours figuring out the wiring....

Thanks everyone!

BTW, after checking the rest of the electrical systems (except the heater controls) Everything seems to work EXCEPT the power windows, sunroof, and the turn signals.... Common power source for those??
