Anyone replace their cam position sensor?
While perusing my Chilton/Haynes manuals in an attempt to diagnose the rough idle that occurs after I drive my '91 4EAT Leggy wagon for around 15-20 minutes, I happened to read a step-by-step on the cam position sensor that involved removal of the timing belt and cam sprocket. Looking at the sensor though, it would appear that all that is required to replace it is the removal of the bolt holding it in and un-clipping the connector attaches it to the wiring harness. Wanted some experienced help as to which procedure is correct.
"All four wheels spin? Huh, that's AWD..."

I took mine out and cleaned it when it set the cel off and all you do is take the bolt out and it comes right out, I didn't replace it though but it sounds like you have the right idea on removal and replacement.

yeah don't pull the sprocket.... If you really wanna look at the pickups behind the sprocket, pull the sensor and look in the hole with a flash light.

Re: Anyone replace their cam position sensor?
Haynes/Chilton are garbage. I have had many of them and they both have different procedures for the same jobs and different specs listed. The factory service manual is what I go by but I've even found instances where the FSM has listed different torque specs for the same bolt on different pages in the book! I also don't like how it lists a range rather than one set number. Like 55-72 ft lbs. WTF?
But yeah the cam sensor bolts into the top of the oil pump with one small 10mm bolt. You'll need to use a wrench to get at it unless you remove the alternator which I wouldn't recommend. Check out the wiring as it may have become brittle from oil spills/leaks and broken.
