New here, poor gas mileage

Post by icudruln »

Hey guys,

I'm new here...just picked up a 1993 Legacy L AWD Wagon in early February for a daily. The car has 192,000 miles on it, and I'm just trying to figure out why I have poor gas mileage. I usually get around 200 miles to a full tank...I'd think I'd get around 300 or so normally.

I picked up the car from a dealership, so I don't know how the maintenance was performed by the previous owner; the dealer had the clutch assembly replaced, as well as an oil change, new spark plugs and spark plug wires at my request (I took it to a shop of my choice).

The car threw a CEL, and I originally found this site as I found a diagram showing how to figure out OBD-I codes here, so thanks for that. I'll get the code ASAP, but any ideas what could cause the bad gas mileage? Bad fuel filter, bad o2 sensor would be my first guess...? The car sounds like it has an exhaust leak, but between the 4 or 5 early model Legacy's I've seen, they've all sounded about the same as mine.

Any tips or pointers?

Welcome to the BBS.

Definitely the first thing to do is pull the codes for the ECU to see why the CEL is on.

What type of driving do you do, city/hwy, mix?

A new O2 sensor may help the mileage, but I'd highly suggest you check the ECU before proceeding further with any diagnostics or parts replacement.

Double post! lol. Welcome to the boards! Are you saying you used to get 300 to a tank and now get 200 since the code? I do almost exclusively city driving and only get about 14 mpg's or so  so i get a little more then 200 miles to a tank normally. But my car is boosted with upgrades that im sure dont help with my economy.... lol. Definitely check the code and you might as well replace or check out the easy stuff. Spark plugs and wires are a good start but did you get the stock oem replacements? The correct spark plugs to use in Subaru engines are NGK V-Powers, part no. BKR6E11 for the EJ22, gapped somewhere between .038 and .043 inches( the set i just picked up were gapped from the factory at like .039 all around) . Also the fuel filter is very cheap and easy to replace.
