Unusual engine pull question

Post by Genzaroff »

So this isn't my first Subaru engine pull by any means but this one is somewhat unique and I had a quick question. Got a 92 N/A wagon with the 4EAT. In a perfect world I'd rotate the crank to remove the three flexplate to TC bolts and all would be great. However in this case the engine is totally seized up so rotation is a bit out of the question for now. What I'd like to know is if anyone here has had a similar situation or if I should just remove the engine with the TC attached and risk the front pump? Thanks guys!

First, just to clarify, there are (4) bolts holding the torque converter to the flexplate.

Second, I've pulled a few Subaru engines out by leaving the torque converter attached. I keep the engine parallel to the tranny as best I can. The only tricky part is sliding the torque converter back into the tranny, and making sure it's in all the way. Slide the tube out of the tranny, and attach it to the torque converter, then slide the whole assembly back in. There is a little metal clip that only clips into one of the two slots on that tube.

I hope that makes sense, it's late. I'm going to bed now.

Other option is to pull the whole engine and trans as one unit and disassemble once removed.
