Radiator related question, ej22t/5mt swap.

Post by tsbpenguin »

So I am using my stock n/a AT radiator with my ej22t 5mt swap. I know the differences in how the coolant lines are run. My question is this:
Since the 4EAT is no longer present, the transmission cooler space in the radiator will be unused. Would it be beneficial at all to clean it out and use it as auxiliary space for extra cooling of the engine? Just a thought.

No, just drain the ATF out of them and cap the fittings.

Any particular reason behind this, or just spitballing?

The trans cooler can't be removed and it doesn't take up any appreciable space in the end tank. Just cap them.

Ya I wasn't thinking of removing it. More along the lines of just running a coolant line into/out of the trans cooler to utilize 100% of the radiator's space. I suppose it's too small to make a noticeable difference though.

It won't give you any additional cooling capacity since it is surrounded by coolant at the same temperature. The trans cooler doesn't utilize any of the radiator fins for cooling, it's totally dependent on the coolant temp being lower than the trans temp. Or higher, since it brings the trans up to proper temp faster when cold as well.

In order to take the cooler out you have to separate the end tank from the radiator and you wont be able to get it back on with a good seal at all. Plus when you take the cooler out you will ave to holes in the end tank. Like the others said, just cap the nipples.
