02 wrx 5 spd to 1992 legacy 5 speed conversion questions

Post by jerelm »

Hi there everyone.. I have a few questions.. I have a 91 legacy Turbo originally a automatic Trans.. I swapped a 02 wrx 5 speed into it and the Trans blew up on me.. So while I'm rebuilding it I purchased a 5speed 1992 legacy non turbo Trans.. I was wondering what all i needed to change to make it work.. I have Trans, drive shaft, rear diff, starter and flywheel from the 1992 non turbo.. Will i need to change the axles, drive shaft, and clutch to make it work?

Hi, welcome to the forum! I know you'll need
-a pedal set from a cable clutch car,
- clutch cable
- clutch kit that matches your new tranny

I'm sure others will chime in about anything I missed

Welcome to the BBS.

The main issue is that the non-turbo transmissions have a different style clutch setup. The non-turbo uses a "push" style clutch disengagement, while the turbo uses a "pull" style. To use the non-turbo setup, you would have to use a hydraulic push style clutch slave cylinder & clutch fork. I am not positive, but I think the pivot ball point for the cable vs. hydraulic clutch fork is different....but I can't confirm that. Also, you will need to use the non-turbo flywheel, clutch, & pressure plate.

The driveshaft and axles will be the same, however you will need to swap out the rear diff to match the trans.

If you could get a hold of a push style clutch setup, that would really be helpful so you don't have to mess with converting the clutch fork assembly.

Alright thanks so much guys.. I have the rear diff so I will just go to the local junkyard for the push style clutch assembly.. Should be a cheap fix until i finish the Wrx trans rebuild.. Thanks again for the info..

You can reuse the WRX shift linkage.

You just need to swap the shifter joint on the 92 trans to the newer style. Easy job though.

I started taking the clutch and break pedal assembly out and noticed a plug on top each one of them.. Are they some sort of sensor? I didn't do the Wrx 5 speed swap so I'm sort of confused.. Will i need to swap the sensors or plugs whatever they are..

Yeah you'll need those sensors for the incoming pedal assembly, unless it has those sensors already.

So i noticed there is 2 cables off the 92 n/a Trans from the shift fork.. One us the cable to the clutch pedal and the other one goes into the brake cylinder.. i noticed my cars current wrx set up is completely different.. It looks very confusing to me..will i need to replace my brake cylinder to make that work? My car is a 1991 legacy ss.. Also does my car having abs make this a problem as well?

That's the hill holder, don't worry about it. Should be fine without it

Yeah, you can just remove the hill holder cable assembly. It'll be fine without it.
