I need some info on the 2.5 to 2.2 swap
So I have two subarus, one is a 99 subaru legacy l wagon 30th an. Edition with a 2.2, and a 98 subaru legacy gt wagon with the 2.5. The 2.5 jumped time and bent all the valves and the other wagon was rear ended and totalled out. So I want to salvage one of my cars and swap out the 2.5 with the 2.2. Is it going to be a plug and play or abit more complicated? If anyone can give me a rundown on what I have to do that would be a big help.

Motor swap 2.5 to 2.2
I put a 95 ej22 in my old 99 2.5gt and used my old ecu, it was a really straightforward swap... We did it in 3 hours. Ran into a couple vac hoses we needed to reroute and adjust but other than that it went perfect. U WILL notice some power loss from the ej25 but no hg issues! Lots of documentation on this swap on sl-i

Merged topics.
Unfortunately, the 99 ej22 is a 1 year special engine that has virtually nothing in common with the 90-98 ej22's. I don't know that you could use it easily.

The last year for the EJ22 in the Legacy was 99, but it was still available in the GC/GF/GM Impreza through 01, IIRC.

Oh I forgot about those. Point is, this is a phase ii engine that isn't compatible with phase I electronics.DerFahrer wrote:The last year for the EJ22 in the Legacy was 99, but it was still available in the GC/GF/GM Impreza through 01, IIRC.

'99 EJ222 (complete engine code) was the Phase 2 engine that was also used in the '99-'01 Impreza. Different heads, intake manifold and wiring harness that make it incompatible w/the earlier models.
You CAN use the block to swap <> but since your issue is the heads, you're stuck. Go read up on this on the USMB site as it's covered there repeatedly.
FWIW, you can use an older EJ22E ('95-'98) - w/a few minor swap issues - in the '98 GT , which is better engine than the EJ25D/2.5 anyway, and usually cheaper.
The '99 EJ22 should be swap material for a '99-'03 Legacy/Outback/Forester w/2.5 or Impreza w/2.2.

Re: I need some info on the 2.5 to 2.2 swap
As the owner of a '99 Legacy with the PhaseII EJ22, I will agree with those above and say that you cannot use it to swap into a PhaseI EJ25 car easily. You can however use a '95-'98 EJ22 motor from an auto to replace your EJ25. You need one from an auto to keep the EGR. If you use a '96-98 motor you will also need the matching single-port header since it is different than the EJ25 dual-port one.
Also I would like to point out that if you used a '99 PhII Legacy engine to replace a PhII EJ25 in an Impreza or '00+ Legacy you would have to use the donor vehicle's intake manifold and wiring harness since the '99 Legacy EJ22 has a one-off harness and some electrical items differ from the later cars.

Re: I need some info on the 2.5 to 2.2 swap
I too have a 99 30th anniversary legacy L, 5 speed, with a 2.2 that blow,,,, I also have a 95 legacy L, auto trans, 2.2 (that's different from 99) with bad auto trans. I want to put the 95 2.2 into the 99 car but saw the wiring was different, mainly plugs and such. Will this swap work??? I do not have all the parts from the 99 due to motor was taking out before I bought it, but I do having wiring, heads, n few other odd n end stuff. Both cars are OBD 2, same bodys, Im just a little lost at the moment from what I have read, and searched over the enet.
Re: I need some info on the 2.5 to 2.2 swap
As noted above:
1999 was a crossover year. The Legacy L model used the Phase 2 EJ22, while the '99 Legacy GT and Outback (and SUS) used the EJ25D that was commonly swapped out w/the EJ22e.
The phase 2 engines' electronics were not compatible w/the earlier EJ22's.
You CAN use the short block, if you wish. Put the '99's heads on the '95's block.
Go read up on any gotchas on the USMB (Ultimate Subaru) site.
