Waterpump Failure....

Post by robertpaige »

So my waterpump is leaking, i'm pretty sure. It's dripping a lot off the back of the thermostat housing. I overheated earlier and checked and it was dripping onto my header and burning off. Filled with coolant and made it home 30 mins away. What are the chances that it's just a thermostat gasket or something? Where is the WP weep hole? I do not have the money to do my WP and its my daily right now.. i'm pretty screwed. I have a new OEM thermo, so I may pop that in and hope for the best. My question is, my timing belt only has around 5k at most on it. Can I just buy a WP and reuse all the stuff? Just put a new WP in, or do I need to buy EVERYTHING like the belt, tensioners, etc, cause like I said i'm so broke right now. I might be able to afford just a WP.

It sounds like it the water pump. I never seen a thermostat leak even when there were no gasket. If you only have 5k on the t belt you will be fine, I would just replace the pump.

Ditto, the other components only need to be replaced if they're unserviceable (even though every shop will tell you otherwise). I only replaced the WP when I did mine (along with the tstat and gasket), and I have over 30k on the timing belt. It still looked nearly new.

Be careful with the two lines coming out the right side of the pump, one of mine had become permeable and weeped water with no visible cracks. Happened at the same time as the WP going out, so I didn't notice it leaked from two slightly different spots.

Thanks guys. Someone is gonna sell me a OEM waterpump off a 93 T Leg that only has 15k on the pump, for $25!! Can't really go wrong with that. The car is drivable I just have to top off coolant, I put some coolant conditioner in also that seemed to help a little?

I've never done this before so I hope I don't get too lost.. I don't see it being very complicated.. just havent digged into timing belts before.. :/

There are some little tips for the timing belt, especially when it comes to the tensioner. Don't compress it too quickly. Also, when you install it you need to use a screwdriver or something to make sure it is shifted all the way to the left so it can properly tension the belt. Also, rotate the engine by hand (breaker bar) before cranking it up. This helps to properly tension the belt and reduce chances of it slipping a tooth on start up.

You can use small chip clip type clamps to keep the belt on the cam pullies. It can sometimes move around and then it's off a tooth.

Here are the FSM scans for the timing belt job.
