90 BC/ 90 BC AT -> MT Swap and quick shift question

Post by Plazma »

Hello Internet,

I recently was in an accident with my 90 Legacy with MT (Trans Code: TY752VA1AA). As luck would have it I came across another 90 Legacy with an AT (TZ102ZA1AA).

I've been doing my research on the whole Conversion process but I have a couple questions.

I know the 90's transmissions were all cable the hydraulics weren't intro'd until 92 if I've done my research correctly. I've been over to LegacyCentral and read the entire work log from Dave on his 4EAT > 5MT swap. I've also been to Legacy777's site detailing his trans swap with short throw shifter. In it he uses a short throw linkage (P/N CF1010FA001) with a particular joint that subaru sells. He's using a 92 Turbo trans in that swap.

My question is this, can anyone tell me if this short throw shift linkage will work on a cable transmission off an N/A legacy or does it need to be the Hydraulic turbo trans for this mod to work properly?

Secondly, am I correct in believing that the 90 4EAT has a 3.9 gear ratio while the 5MT has a 4.11? I have the differential that's not a problem I just need to know if when I pull the trans, I should pull the differential at the same time.

Welcome,

First the linkage will fit, all 5spd are configured the same. The newer shifters like wrx's just need the appropriate joint to mate to the transmission. (As you know)

For the rear diff 90-91 4eats had 4.11's unless it had a Transmission swap with a newer 4eats.

Hydro clutches were only for 5MT Turbo Sedans, 91-94. All non-turbo 5MT Legacies 89-94 used a cable clutch.

Thank you for clearing that up. My biggest concern was using a cable clutch with the short shifter, seems like it won't be a problem, though I guess I'll have a better picture once I take the transmission down next weekend. Getting excited for part one of this swap.

Thank you for the welcome Josh, you'll definitely see more of me.

Quick question to anyone out there. Initially I decided to use the Subaru Quick Shift, but now as I'm reading more would I be able to achieve the same effect with a Cobb short shifter and bushings to tighten up the stock linkage work just as well and save myself around $100?

I'm not sure the cobb short shifter will work with the older style linkage. If it does, then yeah you should be able to use that and get new bushings.
