fuel pump + ECU problems

Post by ssspoon@aol.com »

Hey Bill, too cool, thanx muchas.

I have just been thru 2 weeks of hell.

The in tank fuel pump died, or at least that was the diagnoses. Do not
understand rationale for in-tank pump since they fail.
Mechanic just happened to have one which is lucky cause turbos use a diff
pump than all the other Legacys of course.

A week later car just shut down while I was checking out electrical (or at
least that's what I called myself doing). I was idling the car with the
battery disconnected. I had been having to jump start the car and was trying
to see if I had charged the batt successfully or if there seemed to be an
alternator problem.

Turns out the battery terminals were not as tight as they should have been
after the fuel pump install. They didn't move when I tugged at them, but
actually they needed to be quite a bit tighter. Something to remember when
the terminals have been loosened.

Anyway after tightening the battery, the starter turned over just fine, but
no fire.

Another trip to Raffi Subaru in Lawndale, California pointed to a dead ECU
cause this time no spark and no pulse at the injector wires. Don't know if
running the engine without the battery connected killed my ECU. A cross
country internet search turned up 2 or 3 good sources and the car fired right
up with the preowned ECU. It seems a little peppier pulling out from stop
but then misses and stumbles while accelerating. Tomorrow when it's
daylight, I'll check the plug wires. Loose wires have caused the same
symptom. I'll give it a few days and if the problem persists, I might try an
ECU reset.

Since the problems came so close together, I need to try energizing the fuel
pump now, maybe it was the ECU giving out all the time.

The bright side of all this is a recently totaled Legacy L wagon at the
mechanic. Some of the parts I need are of course smashed, but I have dibs on
the one good clear headlight lens cover. (Am I the only one with faded brown
lens covers?). Dibs on the windshield washer tank so if I "f___" it up trying
to convert it to a reservoir for my planned air-to-water intercooler, I won't
feel so bad. Dibs on the right rear tail light to replaced mine that has had
a chunk chipped out for a couple of years. Dibs on the carpeted dash cover.
And of course dibs on the sunvisor, which the mechanic knew would be the
first thing I would ask about.

Do you need anything from a parts car with around 64,000 miles?

fuel pump + ECU problems

Hi Larry,
You might want to get that mechanic to put a scope on the
alternator I ran in to a few that had some type of internal problem
and with a scope you might see a voltage spike on the output. This has
taken ECUs and digital dashs out in Subies and your "mystery" sounds a
little like it could be a culprit.
