Horrible transmission leak.

1990 legacy with ej22t

I was on the way to the pick and pull yard today and noticed my car burning something like a rocket ship pulled over and put it in park and ALL of the transmission fluid drained out of the car pretty quickly had to have it towed home.

After getting the car off the ground enough to look under it, I cant find any broken lines or hose its right around where the torque converter meets the transmission. at first I thought it was a broken line (because of the rate it exited the transmission) transmission is fine besides the fact it has no fluid left.

Leaking from the flywheel, or around it any suggestions?

it's actually SPRAYING out from behind the flywheel, onto the flywheel and spinning and spraying out the flywheel air-hole viewing area opening. anyone know the name of the seal...? or anyone who's had this problem before. I've never seen so much fluid vent out of a transmission all at once before.

There is an input shaft seal right around the err shaft. Have to pull the engine or tranny if you haven't already

I'm putting her up on some 24" jack stands, hopefully that gives me enough room to pull the tranny and replace that $6 seal...

Yeah good luck. That happened to me on an automatic once, and like you said, it was a gusher!

Was it a seal you can just pull and replace once the transmission's out? mines nearly out just wondering what to expect.

Yes, you replace the seal when the transmission is separated from the torque converter. Reason I damaged mine was I left the torque converter bolted to the engine when I removed it.

In the haynes manual, it says to unbolt the tq converter to engine bolts, then shows a diagram with arrows pointing to two bolts, these are the only transmission to engine bolts? seems like there's more, but maybe there's a separate piece of bellhousing on the engine.

There are at least 4 bolts going between the flex plate and torque converter.
