To swap or rebuild that is the question

Post by josephd »

Hi I have a 93 legacy ss and the 5sp stock Trans is toast. I got quoted $2,900 to rebuild it. I was wondering what would be the best route for my car either rebuilding or swapping for something more reliable?

$2900!?!?!?! You can buy a STi 6MT for basically that.

I would put a Legacy GT trans in. Or buy a 6MT.

You can get a used WRX tranny and rear diff for under a grand.

Welcome to the BBS!

Yeah, $2,900 is a little steep. Other used options can be head for less money. Some modifications need to be done to the WRX transmissions around the starter & starter mounting. Additionally, if you go with the WRX transmission you will need to replace the rear diff since the WRX transmission has a 1:1.1 gear reduction in the tail housing.

There are other options as well, so I'd suggest searching to see what's out there. Your turbo legacy transmission has a 3.9 final drive ratio (rear diff is 3.9) and it has the hydraulic "pull" style clutch fork assembly. The hydraulic "push" style clutch setup can be used, but may require a little bit different setup on the clutch lines & slave cylinder.

Search around-

I found a 1993 trans with 1900 miles on it from upstate NY last fall on Car-parts.com for $1000 shipped to maine.

I grabbed an N/a trans and swapped the gears into my turbo case. I also swapped the rear diff for a matching 4.11 to the transmission.

all in all it cost me 200 bucks.
