Very strong fuel smell when ambient temp. is hot

Post by Danteandsoob »

Okay, so the title might seem strange, but when it is very hot outside, I get a smell of fuel. Not sure if it means it's running rich or lean (is there a way to tell the difference by smell?) and it's been a this way for the time I've owned the car (3 years).

Car info: '93 Legacy L 2.2L N/A

Thanks!

P.S. I've been reading, and people say it might be the coolant temp. Sensor?
And as far as I can tell, it's a fuel smell, not coolant.

CTS (coolant sensor)? Tune-up time? 02 sensor? Clean your MAF (carefully!)? Clogged Cat? Leaky injector? Fuel tank leak?

Is the smell stronger in the front/back/inside/outside?

What's your MPG? Changed recently?

There is no adjustment to the fuel system, etc. if that's your goal. I'd make sure everything is is good working order and go from there.

I noticed this on my Aunt's cars in Las Vegas. Fuel was expanding and the gas vapors were being pushed out faster than the charcoal canister was able to neutralize. She said this happens every year in tripple digit weather.

Perhaps your charcoal canister is bad, or has a leak in it or in the line? Is this happening only when your fuel tank is full?

Hmmmm, mine just got more 'smelly' too. I know Josh converted his to the 2-line NA version.....might be a good time to do so. Good idea - thanks.

You may want to also check the fuel filler neck to make sure it's not corroded and leaking when the tank pressures up.

If your fuel mileage hasn't changed, then I'd lean more towards a fuel vapor/emissions issue vs. coolant temp sensor or other engine sensor issue.
