all wheel drive working?

Post by happyboy »

I have a 96 Legacy L . I am asking for an easy way ( beside putting it up on a hoist) to determine if the all wheel drive is working. My wife thinks the last time it was in for repairs the mechanic said only two wheel drive was working. Thank you very much for any ideas you have.

Hi,
Does the AT Oil Temp light flash when you turn the key On or start the car? If so, they are Codes stored in the transmission computer (TCU) that can tell you what's going on 'back there'. Search on Subaru sites for how to read the codes.

Otherwise, find a patch of dirt/gravel road and see if @ least one front wheel and one rear spin when you punch it.

Also, under the hood, by the pass. strut tower is a fuse holder marked FWD. Insert a fuse and it puts the car in Front Wheel Drive mode (read up in the Owner's Manual). You 'should' be able to chirp the front tires if you punch it - even on dry land....if you take the fuse back out and try it there won't be any chirping.

I must have looked in the wrong place because I did not see any fuse holder marked FWD on the passanger's side. There were fuses on the driver's side and they all looked ok. Also, the fuses in the interior looked ok, too. The AT oil temp light flashed 16 times when I started it up.

There is a FWD fuse holder behind the passenger strut tower in the engine bay. The plastic cover should have the "FWD" marking on it.
