oil pressure/oil recommendation, new hlas losing prime

Post by bcmaxx »

I have a ej22e, wrx oil pump, turbo supply line teed off the oil pressure sensor port, new hlas, poperly bled. at high engine rpm the rh bank hlas are losing there prime ( 5000rpm plus). I am currently running 5w30 mobil synthetic oil, 15-16 psi at idle (740rpm) and 56-59 at 5000rpm. Is the oil too thin at operating temp?, is my turbo theiving too much flow from the rh oil gallery? pressure seems just fine, could it be flow? I also run only oem subaru filters. Was thinking of crimping my steel tube turbo supply line , and maybe changing to a 10w30? or 15w40? at a loss. Problem seemed to crop up after doing the tcm mod, which brings the rpm higher before shifting.

What year WRX oil pump are you using?

What turbocharger are you using (is it sleeve or ball bearing turbo)?

I'm seeing about 19-20 psi of oil pressure at idle, so your pressure is inline with what I have. I am however seeing around 80-85 psi at 5,000 rpm. So either the pump is not flowing what it should or you're losing too much pressure to the turbocharger.

Are you using the stock location for the oil pressure sensor port & turbo oil feed line?

So you are feeding the turbo oil from the oil pressure switch port..?

That taps off the main galley line that feeds the heads... What it sounds like that the turbo is "starving" the head(s) since you are splitting the pressure so far upstream from the HLAs.

Factory setup pulls the oil from the lifter galley at the end of the pass. side head, I imagine to avoid starving the HLAs, rockers and cam journals...

I would suggest trying to find a turbo-spec pass head cam retainer that has the tap for the coolant and oil feeds.

Also, can't go wrong with Rotella T6 5w-40. EJ motos LOVE this stuff!

07 wrx pump, I think they are the same 02-07 , was brand new. yes teed off the oil pressure sensor port. It comes and goes, some days quiet somedays, rh bank tapping. much better with 10w30 oil. the turbo is a td04 off a 03 wrx. I was thinking the same, the turbo is starving the rh bank . question: should I stop driving it until repaired, it would only make sense it is running lean when the ticking on those particular cylinders is happening because there isnt the full lift because of the collapsed lifter.

I drove 8K miles on sub 60 psi max oil pressure. Bad news. All bearings were worn as well as the whole crankshaft toast.

The low oil pressure is increasing wear on the main and rod bearings as well as affecting your lifters. Since the oil system works as a whole, any bleeding in the system lowers flow across the system....which can be observed via pressure drop.

Installed restriction. Still tickity ticking. Im going to take apart the rh bank. Swap on a spare rocker assembly. Bleed all hlas again . Hoping there is just some trapped air. Or plugged passage in the assembly. Hope i dont have to deal with this all over with my 22t when i install it. Hlas are pricey. Any advantage to bleeding them in lucas additive or some thicker gear lube?

You should just bleed them in clean oil. I suppose if there is gunk in there, bleeding them in some type of solvant and then bleeding again in oil may help.

installed 8 new ones again, bled, rebled. blew air through the oil passage, filled all the cups with thick oil and checked for bubbles to be sure there is flow, injected oil through , installed lifters injected more oil, now just to install.
