Replacing all the HLA's

Post by lucas »

anyone every go through and replace all the HLA's my wifes car has a lot of lifter noise everytime she starts the car. Its still winter and cold every morning so I know that doesn't help. Id like to just replace all the lifters but can't justify paying 20 somethings bucks a piece for one from subaru. I see on ebay I can buy and entire set to do the whole car for like 60-80 buck.

I just curious if anyone has used aftermarket HLA's?

I'd just pull the valve cover and rocker assembly to check the lifters. They will typically either be bad or won't be bad. I'd bleed the lifters first and if all appear ok, then you may have an issue with oil delivery to the lifters or the lifter may be leaking down after the engine fires.

i have suspected oil delivery. when we bought that car the engine was on its last legs from sucking so much straight dirt and water for god knows how long. When i changed the valve cover gaskets i noted that the lifter gear was completely caked and encrusted with just grim. Maybe ill take them all off and deep clean them with a wire brush and some gnarly cleaner.

I only get the HLA noise when the oil has been changed (and it's always for a random amount of time), or when the oil is very low. So it's not as bad for me, as it is for your wife's car.

I've thought about getting the rebuilt ones as I think a complete set from Subaru would be a bit costly. Then I figured I'd deal with it till I get to 400k and consider a rebuild at that time.
