I was pulling off the highway when I heard some strange noises emanating from the engine... Skipping my planned Chinese take-out lunch, I went straight home...

I popped the hood and blipped the throttle, and this horrible knocking noise was coming from the engine :shock: ... Oh @#$%, I said... Please, for the love of God, anything but that!!!

I took it to work very slowly, and asked a tech what was going on, he heard it and developed an upset look on his face, which was very quickly transferred to my own face, I said "Please, don't tell me, it can't be"... He said "Yup, I think it is"...

I was thinking to myself, this is impossible, I don't abuse my car, I change the oil frequently, and I use a heavy enough oil, plus this is a Subaru EJ22, one of the toughest engines I've ever seen... I can't be throwing a rod!!!

But the actual engine builder came and listened to it, and he said 1) this engine is running way too good to be getting ready to throw a rod, and 2) the knocking is not constant, only after judicious throttle application and then a few seconds after until it idles again...

He concluded that my water pump has called it quits, which is not really worrisome for me because I'm gonna replace my timing belt very soon anyway, and replacing a water pump is far cheaper than an engine rebuild!

Phew! Wow, I'm glad it turned out to just be the water pump.

That reminds me of a thread that was up in NASIOC's OT forum a while back. a guy was upgrading his rods in a Honda on clubSi.com or something. He pulled everything apart, replaced the rods and put everything back together. He took it for a spin and heard these horrible knocking noises. he took the engine back apart and noticed there was a lot of free play on every rod. he asked if he needed the "u-shaped thingies" from off of the old rods. he figured these upgraded rods wouldn't need them :lol: :lol: :lol: . 10 out of 10 for effort, less several million for good thinking.

Anyways, I'm glad your baby is still in great shape.

I bet its NOT the water pump.

By your description I can say my legacy does the exact same thing. Ive always believed its the hydrolic adjusters going dead.

I made it a point to listen to my valvetrain, and it's quiet as a mouse, even the injectors are barely noticeable (I always thought our injectors were very quiet)...

Try the water trick ;) it may clear things up... and if not, you get to blow steam/smoke all over the place...
