the catalytic converter right behing the turbo on my car is smoking
profusely. is it shot or what? what would happen if i just gutted
the thing?

I'm wondering if this is my problem also. I have a smoke coming from the left back of the engine area. It will come out the hood scoop and the front grill after hte car is sitting. Sometimes it happens more then others. Any ideas?

yeah, exactly!!! i just changed my crank seal yesterday too and now
today i'm not leaking any oil but still i have smoke from that exact
same area! i'm thinking my cat is burnt out.

Most likely an engine seal on it way out and the oil is leaking onto
the exhaust. My twin turbo started doing that as soon as I changed to
Synthetic oil.
