About to buy a 93 Turbo Wagon.. what to look out for/advice

Post by dia182@yahoo.com »

Hi,
I'm in the market for a used Legacy wagon (AWD), and found a 93 turbo
at a local dealership that I liked. It has around 80k miles, and I
enjoyed the test drive much more than the 95-97 Brighton's (even the
manuals) that I also tried. The car needs new brakes, new shocks and
the electric mirrors do not work, and I spotted rust in a couple of
spots. The car was very lively, and also much more fun to drive than
the above-mentioned Brightons despite its slushbox. Can you please
list a few things that tend to go wrong with these scoobies to watch
out for when inspecting the car, as well as any ammunition that I can
use against the dealer during our negotiations. Any quirks welcome :)

So far I know of the following (the first two courtesy of an ex Turbo
owner):
- coolant overflow tank will break upon the slightest touch by now,
if it hasn't already
- a number of turbos go into base-boost mode after 6-7 years.
- very few of these on the road, finding parts a potential problem
- exorbitant prices on parts

thanks in advance
gus

I want add a question to this topic, does the turbo need some kind of
maintenance if it is working OK?

Another Touring Wagon owner here...

My mirrors haven't acted strange, but i've adjusted them all of 3
times in the last year...

The automatics are known to be a little weak, but the turbo trans is
a tad stronger. A new filter and fluid flush will get you a lot
more miles out of it.

I've seen the stock turbos going well over 150k/m without any
maintenance. The IHI RB52 is truly an incredibly good turbo. Just
keep the oil fresh and let it cool down after hard running and you
shouldn't have any problems.
