Subject: Re: intercooling size ? for Mike P
.... now i have to see if i can track down a top
mount suby intercooler. ya think one would fit a 92 legacy turbo(us
spec) with minimal problems? you say us spec. wrx's have them, any
specific year?
Yeah Mike, there's a few problems
The US spec turbo outlet kind of angles upward at about a 45 degree angle towards throttle body. The Subaru coolers are made to mate
with the larger overseas turbos that have an outlet exiting horizontally.
So instead of this == ===
You have this // ===
Mike Danilowicz solved the problem with a radiator hose elbow. Check out the hose section at a radiator shop or Autozone and maybe you can avoid the hassle I'm going thru of looking for another turbo. If you do another turbo, one of the overseas Subaru turbos will probably be the easiest to fit to all the manifolds cause the flange pattern is the same as ours. You might even be able to "reclock" the turbo you have so the outlet will line up with the cooler inlet. I have heard no you can't and yes you can, and it's probably the first thing you should determine. Then you should try to get intercooler dimensions from somebody that has an air-to-air on a Legacy cause the overseas WRX units are not all the same size, and from I hear, certain ones are too big to fit without problems. All WRX have intercoolers. I can't remember what someb! ody told me I should look for when I was still trying to figure what to do, cause I ended up going with a air-to-water I.C. from a Japan spec Legacy and they are all the same. I think if you stick close to your model year you'll be safe, but you really should get positive verification, maybe from a couple of independent sources. Maybe Wild Bill Robinson can help you with specifics on which I.C. to get from what make and model year car, I think he has an A/A. The US WRX stuff will probably work too, and at least you can visit a dealer and do some measuring with your car right there next to one, then do an internet salvage yard search if it looks good. The rest is just hasseling with repositioning all the hoses, wires, cables, brackets, plumbing and whatever else is in the way.
Good Luck
Larry
