any tips on taking the door panel off?

Post by snowfiend159 »

I have the chiltons manual which gives you steps, I just want to be
sure that I don't break any of the little plastic clips and such. is
there a must have tool to do the job yourself? I am a bit of a newbie
at working with car interiors, maybe my question is faulty...
any advicewould be much apreciated.
Thanks
Dave

any tips on taking the door panel off?

Post by Josh Colombo »

Dave,

I've had mine off more times then I can count, and it only takes me about 5 min if that to do it....of course that is with lots of practice :) and the occasional swearing.

First thing, put the window all the way down. This serves one main purpose, it's alot easier to wiggle the door panel out when you don't have that glass in the way....second if you have tint, it will protect it from getting scratched.

Next step, remove the three screws around the speaker grill. Then with a small flat head screwdriver, pop off the little plastic rectangular piece below the arm rest. Next pop out the little black foam thingy at the top of the door/armrest handle. There are screws in there, remove those screws.

With that same small flat head screwdriver, you will need to remove the plastic trim piece around the door opener handle. At the hinge of the lock (the thing that swivels back and forth) At the top you want to put that screwdriver at that pivot point/hinge and press up. There is a little clip that is holding it on. You want to do the same thing at the bottom of the hinge, (press down though) There is the same little plastic clip. The back end of the plastic piece should be loose. Now take the door opener handle, hold it open, while holding the back of the plastic trim piece, push it forward, and the front part should unsnap itself....once you do that, you should be able to get that piece out.

Now it's time for those little plastic goonies around the door. You can use a screwdriver, and slide it along the door panel until it stops, and slowly wiggle each plastic goonie out.....or pull gently with your hands on that section....just do that around the door panel and everything should be loose.

When you go to remove the door panel, you want to lift the bottom away from the door, and gently slide panel back and away from the door, it should unhook itself from the front part and you should be able to wiggle it out.

You will need to disconnect the power door lock wires. It's a standard plug connection with a little clip you undo. Make sure you got the windows where you want them before you remove them, or you'll have to plug the connector back in to get them to move.....also if you have the drivers door panel out and unplugged, none of the windows will work.

Also.....NOTE: NOTE: Don't forget to hook that window wire back up when you go to put it back together.....or else you'll have to take the panel off all over again.

Any questions....just holler.

Josh
