5-Speed rebuild versus replace

Post by William D. Robinson »

I have always been a believer in just replacing a dead engine or transmission with a lower mileage one from a wrecking yard (breaker), but I made an exception on the manual transmission in my 92 USA Legacy Turbo. The original tranny has big beefy gear faces and is good in every way except that the synchros would hydrolock, which made it a slow shifting bastard for its entire life. I had Richard Buckner of Portland Oregon USA rebuild mi tranny using Subaru replacement synchros that are "ventilated" so that they don't hydrolock. That sucker shifts great! I notice it the most when downshifting, as I can drop down at way higher speeds than with my stock tranny. I kept the 3.9 ratio, as I like to peg the speedometer periodically.

Bill,

Since the gear ratio's are pretty similar, you think my tranny and the turbo legacy 5spd would be similar in driving characteristics? Anyone know if the turbo auto has a similar gearing ratio? How hard is it to find a turbo legacy 5spd?

Thanks & Merry Christmas

Josh

Josh-My AWD `92 wagon with AT has 3.90:1 diffs & works real well in town & on the open road. Example: 85 mph @ 3100 rpm-plenty of torque around town. I used to run very low gears in my early big-block Camaro days but grew tired of them in no time. Personally, I would`nt run gears any lower than 4.11:1. My 3 cents---ROD (AZ.)

5-Speed rebuild versus replace

Post by Josh Colombo »

Hey Rod,

Thanks for the feedback. I think now what I'm lookin into doing is trying to find a FWD 5spd Legacy sedan. It will have the same final drive ratio as my auto has, 3.7 So I should be happy with how the gearing and stuff is, but still have a manual to give me much more positive engine feedback and such, plus a hell of alot more fun to drive IMO. A buddy of mine up in PA said he saw a couple go for $500. That's nothing really....and I can cannibalize all the parts I need off of it. So that is sorta what I am looking at now. If I could find one in PA, I'd probably fly up and drive it back down to memphis. I'm going to be moving to Houston here in two months or so. Company would pay to get that second vehicle to Houston if I had it before I move.

I'm goin to send Robert Ansick an email, sorta let him know what my plans are and such. If I can get a hold of 5spd legacy, I'd like to do the swap some time this spring or early summer. I don't think I could swing a turbo this year....probably would be next year.

Where in Az is Forced Air located? Is he near you? The only major thing I'm a little weary about is tryin to tear into this project by myself....plus I will not know if I have a garage or shop to do the project. So I will mention to Robert about seeing how much it would cost if he would do the swap. I would still like to help and do the work. I am just a little uncomfortable diving in all by myself with no one to back me up. I do have a buddy out near phoenix. I'm not sure if he has a shop where I could do it there. Just thinkin out loud....tryin to pull this project off :)

BTW....what stage turbo kit did you get from Forced Air? I was sorta lookin at the stage 2 because it had an intercooler.

5-Speed rebuild versus replace

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Josh-Robert`s shop is about a 20 min. drive from my house & about 1 1/2 hrs. from downtown Phoenix. His kit is very easy to install but you`ll need to get some exhaust work done (to hook up the up/down pipes.) He`ll also install it for you if needed. When you e-mail him, ask if you can participate in the installation. I have a Stage 1 kit but with a ball-bearing turbo that`s normally found in a Stage 3 kit. An intercooler will be my spring project. Right now, the tuning is more important as I have some "tip-in" detonation. I`m working on plug heat ranges & octane boost mixes; I just picked up a `newer` throttle body that`ll be modified to 62mm + it`ll be smoothed out to pick up the extra HP. It may even help with the off-idle pinging--we`ll see! Just as a footnote, with an AWD wagon and the auto trans, I`ve smoked about everything I`ve run into; the car is a blast to drive! When you install his kit, it`ll put in a different league entirely. Let me know when you`ve e-mailed Robert and I`ll put in a good word for you, ok? Post me back---ROD (AZ.)

5-Speed rebuild versus replace

Post by Josh Colombo »

Hey Rod,

I emailed Robert yesterday afternoon. It was a pretty lengthy one....hehe. For the time being I mainly asked about the 5spd - auto conversion. If things go as planned, I am goin to be looking for a FWD 5spd 90 Legacy. Goin to cannibalize the transmission and other goodies out of it. That will keep my same final gear ratio.

My main task or problem I'm goin to run into is that I'm movin to Houston, TX in two months or so. I am not sure if I will have a garage or not to pull off the swap myself. Plus I'm not sure how comfortable I feel doing it all by myself with no one in the immediate vicinity to call at 10 pm on saturday night, and say...."hey I can't get this thing in....mind givin me a hand...." I did tell Robert I would like to help if he did the work on the tranny, and with the turbo.

I did ask him about doin stuff to the internals of the engine....if there is anything that should be done....same question to anyone on the board as well? The engine will probably have close to 160k miles on it....by the time the turbo goes in. Right now the turbo budget and time table is scheduled probably some time in 2003. I know it's a good year away, but if I pull off the tranny swap, that's goin to use a decent chunk of change.....plus those pesky student loans....grrr.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback Rod. Put in a good word for me with Robert :)
