ABS or not?

Which do you guys prefer come winter time? Do you like ABS, or would you rather do without?

I say no ABS. It doesnt really help in snow at all. Summer is a different story, but for snow I would rather pump the brakes myself.

This being my first car, I'm used to ABS. However the ABS system did shut off several times this weekend so I got to experience both ABS and non. I must say I thought that my ABS system did a crappy job in the snow.

ABS blows. I hate that damn pedal vibrating. I'd rather not trust my damn computer in a slide. I feel that I don't stop sooner at all in the winter. I'd love to take it out.

I also dislike ABS in snow, but otherwise I'm fine with it. Probably cause I'm lazy and don't want to pump.

Don't like 'driving aids'. If I crash I want it to be an honest crash. The extra room in the engine bay is nice, too.

I like ABS for the most part, it helps me alot when driving too fast on snow and ice.

well i can say that i like still being able to steer when the ABS kicks in.

but i try to only brake hard enough on ice to keep the ABS from engaging yet still stop the car.

it all depends on the situation.

dont like it cuz its one more thing that can go wrong on the car.

that being said i think the ABS is much more effective on my 94 SS than on my 95 L. but i think that is because the SS has Hakka 1s on it while the L has old al seasons on it.

We have one of the best, least intrusive ABS systems. There is nothing wrong with it. Go drive a Honda with ABS and see why I like it in my Sport Sedan so much.

[offtopic]Greg, me and Snowboarded entered a TSD Rally with studded Hakka 1's on his car with me as driver and him as codriver. Holy crap those things are nice! A local fellow let us borrow them for the rally. And we sure needed those tires on those unpaved unplowed Northern Michigan roads, the 2 wheelie drivers couldn't keep up the average speeds! Oh, and it was hard as all get out to get the ABS to kick in on the snow with those tires[/offtopic]

Keep the ABS, it gives you an edge. It is slightly inferior for super slippery stuff because sliding helps build up material in front of the tires to help slow it down. One car had a different ABS algorithm to let it slide more between pulses to account for this. But that is a very small downfall to an awesome system. Plus everyone should have a winter car so their SS can sit, just like me .

Didn't mind the ABS on dry asphalt, actually I thought it did a good job on it... but hated it on anything slippery or loose

I pulled the relay on my abs because it was pumping all the time, even when the car was off. The brake pedal is a little spongy the first time you push on it but other than that i like it.

Hmmm, that's a toughy. I've never found my ABS to be too obtrusive (I hate the noise it makes though) but in general I like to have complete control. I can't ever remember a time when I was thankfull for the ABS really either. I voted NO ABS for that fact but I really don't mind our ssytem. It also helps to balance the cars weight.

I wonder if the ABS would've helped me this morning when I beached myself for an hour because the car refused to slow down or change direction. Friggin' ice under snow. I was lucky we got the light fluffy stuff, so all I lost was a mudflap.

I don't have it because it was an option, and my grandma didn't want it when she bought the car. Thank god.

I don't like it, though... if I'm going to be doing braking, I'd rather be doing it manually, so that I'm in complete control of the action. ABS is really designed to save those who used to instinctively slam their brake pedal in emergency situations.

And the funny thing is, now that there's ABS, those same types of people no longer slam on the pedal like ABS is designed to work... and blame the ABS for their accident or lack of stopping power. It's really sad.

That's why M-B uses brake amplifiers that increase brake pressure when it senses a panic stop.

I was in an accident where abs woulda saved me last month. Girl in front on fwy slams on brakes in rsx, i slam on brakes, not gonna make it, swerve into median and 180, lovingly tapping the center wall and dinking my already- damaged and repaired fender. ABS would have prevented me from 180ing. Minor damage that ill fix eventually.

That said, i'd rather not have abs. I don't like extra crap in my car waiting to break. My power windows have failed, and my power doors had my passengers climing through the window for a month (door locked shut and wouldnt unsieze). More junk is just gonna break, brakes are the last thing i want on the fritz. Granted, im a simple-nazi (anti ps and ac too), but simple is best. The other thing is that no abs = the same performance every time.

No ABS in the snow. I will just install a switch to be able to turn it off in the snow and when I want to have fun. I know how to drive and I know I can't stop as fast as my ABS can for most normal driving. I can live without it and not feel unsafe in the least.
I do like it for wet/dry roads and normal everyday driving.
Ours is a lot better than the WRX's and most cars I've driven with ABS especialy when you think of how old it is.
