Help with frickin Windows. Errrrr.

Post by legacy92ej22t »

As I mentioned in a different thread I won a digital camera and haven't been able to upload the pics onto my PC. The reason I can't is because I have Win 98 1st edition. The camera only supports Win 98 SE or newer OS's. I went ahead and bought a card reader and what do you know, same thing. Only works on 98 SE or newer. I have a friend that gave me a Win 2000 disc so I thought I was golden but I just went to do it and noticed that it's one of those disc that's for new computers ( comes with your PC when you buy it), not an upgrade disc. What do I do? Can I use the disc he gave me or do I have to use an upgrade disc? I don't want to reformat my drives or anything because I have waaaay to much data that I cannot afford to lose.

Please help, I have some cool pics from the Boostjunkie Legacy tear down that I'd like to share. :(

Try looking for drivers at download.com or a similar site. Go to the camera manufacturer's site too. You should be able to find something. I also am using 98 and have had to track down drivers for anything using the USBs. Good luck

Thanks, I'll try looking at download.com.

I've already checked the manufactures site as well as spent about 45 minutes on the phone with their tech support though. The software that came with the camera was supposed to actually have a driver on it for 98 1st e but it isn't working. The tech support guy couldn't get it to work either and told me to get the card reader, which I did and which didn't solve my problem because it won't work on 98 1st e. :(

Can someone at least confirm or deny that I can't use the disc my buddy gave me?

You could try it... Many install discs can also be used as upgrades. If this one can't, it should just tell you so and quit.

But you might not want to put Windows 2000 on this computer... It's not a very high-powered machine, right? 2000 is a lot harder on a machine than 98.

Want me to mail you a 98 SE disc?

Oh, another thing -- you might just want to get a reader that plugs into the parallel port instead of the USB port. Those should work fine with 98 First Edition.

If you go into windows and take all your prized software out of the windows directory and put it somewhere else, and then boot into dos and delete c:windows, you can use that disk. Otherwise, you probably cant. The advantage of doing it this way is that if you have some funky driver related stuff going on, this will wipe it. You can then go and stick your files back where they belong.

However, i don't reccomend this route if you're not fairly handy with a computer; having all your stuff trapped on a hd that won't boot can be scary. If you have a partition installed on the computer (d: is another hd location), you can just hit delete when the computer is first booting, change where it boots from to be D: and pop the disk in and have a dual boot. This might be a bit easier, and you just have to change the boot location to C again to have your old os back. I too have a copy of win98se upgrade that id be happy to send your way.

Or, if the computer works, dont mess with it and dl your pics to someone else's computer. Messing with said files can be stressful.

And I thought this place was full of nerds.

No self respecting nerd would still be on win98. :P

I would get someone with better than win98 to download the pictures and just burn you a copy to disc. If you have a CD-R drive. :)

My PC has a Pentium II-350 with 196 Meg of pc-100 ram. Is that enough for 2000 (the tech guys here at work are telling me it is) or should I definitely go with 98SE?

Is your 98SE disc an upgrade disc? If so I may take you up on that. :)

I do have two HD's (ones full, ones empty) but I don't really want to go through all that and I'm woirried about loosing stuff. I have a lot of pictures of my kids as babies and stuff that I'm just not willing to chanvce losing.

I was talking to some guys at my work and they said if I brought in my tower they could dump my stuff onto another computer and then reformat my drives, install said OS and then reinsert my stuff. I might go this route but I really don't want to transport my tower and stuff if I can avoid it.

I might take you up on the 98SE disc if Vikash's isn't an upgrade or whatever. Thanks for offering. :)
Or, if the computer works, dont mess with it and dl your pics to someone else's computer. Messing with said files can be stressful.
That'd work for the short term but I tend to take a lot of pics and I can't do that everytime I need to upload my pics. :(

Hehehe. I stopped playing PC games because my computer wouldn't keep up and I have so many other gaming platforms. Pretty much I just use the PC for pics and internet.

I'd love to get a new PC but I'd rather have a car that runs. :)

I take waaaaay to many pics to have to do that everytime I need to upload. :/

Your machine can run 2000 but 98SE will probably be faster. The disc I have isn't an upgrade disc but I seem to remember using it to upgrade a Windows 95 machine at some point... I'll send it to you.

Usually the only difference between an upgrade CD and a full install CD is that the upgrade one refuses to run if it can't find a valid older version already installed.

Actually, wait -- you have broadband, right? Ima email you something.

I'd suggest working at trying to get the camera/files to work before redoing/upgrading OS's.

Even though you can upgrade....things don't always necessarily work/go super well. There's always little bugs that pop up.

I'd be happy to walk you through troubleshooting. If you have broadband, there's a remote admin program I use on my servers, mom, & uncle...and have used it with subyluvr that would allow me to see your pc and troubleshoot it from there.

Do the driver's install for the camera? Or does it give you an error saying you can't install it on 98?

Personally I think something's messed up with your USB. Has USB ever worked? Sometimes you need to tweak things in the bios if it's an older motherboard.

As for the 98SE disc.....I've got full blown copies you can install/upgrade do whatever you want with. I've also got them setup on my ftp, so if it comes to that point, and you want to try the upgrade route, you can d/l it from me.

Let me know what you'd like to do, and how I can help.

BTW...what camera do you have?

Josh, I agree with you. The thing is, though, that Windows 98 First Edition has kind of broken USB mass storage support. Almost all USB mass storage devices require 98SE at least. That's why I suggested the parallel port reader instead of the USB one.

I also suggested upgrading to SE because it's very similar to what he's already got and pretty much everything should continue to just work.

Yeah I sort of knew that in the back of my mind about the USB support, but was thinking there was a patch or something that could be applied to make it work.

I definitely agree a parallel reader is the way to go if he doesn't want to mess with OS changes.

Whatever he wants to do....I can supply software.

BTW win98se is 545mb, and spanned into 29 19mb files.

OK, I DL'd 98SE from Vikash and it fixed me right up. The driver installed off the Software and I'm up and running. You da man Vikash! Pictures will be coming soon! =)

The upgrade went pretty smoothly too. It only crashed once and it was an easy reboot. Evrything seems kosher and my computer actually seems faster now then it did before so I'm a happy camper. :D

Thanks for everyones help.

Glad to help.

Josh - 98SE doesn't have to be that big if you don't include extras. My copy's about 125 megs.
