Does any one know how to check a MAF with out a scan tool?

My Ecu says the MAF sensor is abnormal but I'm not sure I wanna go buy a new one since i thinks this could be a symptom of something else. It also faults on the "air control valve". What is the air control valve and where is it and How do I check it?

First thing I'd suggest is to reset the ECU. Drive the car around and see what codes come back.

The air control valve is the idle air control valve.
