01 Legacy GT Electrical Instrument Malfunction

Post by Bob Weir »

I'm new to Subarus, and need a little help diagnosing why a turn signal is affecting instruments. It occured "for no reason" while driving.

a] "Brake, ABS, Battery, Security" are illuminated on instrument cluster.
b] Activating turn signal, Tack & spedo go to "0" and return to normal with each pulse of turn signal light.
c] Activating AC causes "Add Oil / Temp" to illuminate.

I'm familiar with diagnosing and fixing electrical problems. [I have 1988-9 Merkur Scorpios that have "many" electrical problems.] However, I have electrical schmetics for them, but none for the Subaru.

Your suggestions are appreciated

Your alternator is more then likely on its way out. Go have it tested.

It'd also be a good time to have the battery tested as well.

Exactly what I said on ultimatesubaru.net.

Alternator...
Less than 5 years and only 43,### miles is disappointing. Any opinions (pro/con) regarding manufacturers of replacement alternators are appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong; I presume "1999 Legacy FSM" from Josh's (Legacy777) experiencetherave.com - /subaru_manual_scans is appropriate for my 01 Legacy GT?

1999 Legacy FSM > Service Procedure > Generator indicates brushes are inside and Advance Auto / Parts America shows brushes not available. Is this is the reason for buying a new generator / altenator?

My electrical searches displays numerous comments on inadequate grounding. Anything in particular I should check before spending $2## on generator?

Thanks

Bob
PS Curosity point... 1999 Legacy FSM calls it a "generator." Isn't it an "altenator?"

Back to basics. Alternator only producing 9 volts. Initially I didn't want to accept a "quality" import alternator only lasting 42,### miles. I wonder how long the domestic remanufactured alternator will last.

Bob
Thanks for the help.
