nateo's old impreza (pics and long winded story inside)

okay for the folks that helped him out and maybe able to help me out. before i start to dog me i searched and searched already. ive also emailed nate and awaiting to hear back from him.

i rewired/ cleaned the engine bay wireing up alot. most of it was just rerouting and new wireloom. well when i did this i got a cel and if you blipped the throttle the car would bog horribly and almost die. i was freaking out and trying to figure out what the problem was in the engine bay and couldnt find a damn thing (later i noticed that the problem was the tps and fixed the problem).

so i went onto the cabin area where the ecu was covered with the protector plate (that i covered because when i got the car nothing was really put back together). pulled it off looked at it for like 2 seconds and noticed that i must have pulled a couple connections apart (there were a few of them that were just electrical taped together :x . well now that i got the tps issued resolved but have unfinished connections on the ecu side my car wont start :( . there are like 6 wires that i cant figure out where they go. here are some pics of what im looking at.

i traced the larger gauge black wire back with the blue connector into the engine bay and it actually goes to nothing. it looks like nate hacked it off awhile ago because on the other end of it the copper is oxidized and muddy. that being said i carfully pulled it out making sure not to mess with any of the other wires in the mess.

the white wire looks to goto the o2 sensor (not labled as non of the other wires that are disconnected are).

there is a larger gauge black wire that pigtails out of the ecu that i dont know what needs to be tapped into.

then there is a small cluster on the side oc the ecu that has 4 wires that are jumbled together. 2 have actual splice connectors 2 of them dont.

just looking at this and been screwing around with it trying to figure it out and reading and reading what he went through to frankenstein it together is driving be crazy and im seriously considering swapping out the wiring harness to an ej22t (from what nate told me it has a ej18 in it now with a turbo ecu and 93 turbo powerplant of course). if anyone can please please please help me out i would so greatly appreciate it. thanks in advance.

How good are all the other connectors? I see a lot of wires that look like they've been crimped together. I've seen a lot of those make bad connections. I'm not a big fan of them.

Why don't you soldier the wires together? I think that's the right way to do it. That might take care of bad connectors.

the rest of the connecter are pretty good. the reason i havent soldered anything together is because i need to figure out which of wires taht arent connected go where to get the car running first.

Wow what a mess. It'll be impossible to diagnosis from pictures.

Any wire that's dangling from the ECU side you should be able to figure out from the EJ22T ECU pinout, right?

A wire dangling from the harness side is harder. You could get the FSM for the Impreza and the Legacy side by side. The FSMs are pretty good about labeling the color codes for all the wires.

Ya, the EJ22T harness might be a good option at this point, especially if you think you might find other bad connections. A new harness is going to take a lot of time, but so does tracking down electrical gremlins.

whewts i got the car up and running again this morning.

i went over every single wire that nate did and i redid. i talked to nate on aim last night for probably an hour about it.

i turned out that the single white wire and single black wire coming in from the engine bay werent anything. the white was just a ground and the black one diddnt go anywhere. the two that had crimp ends on them were from a failed attempt at a fcd. the single black wire coming from the ecu was connected to the black wire that led nowhere and from what nate told me diddnt need to be connected. the only disconnected wire was the map ground wire (figureed that out last night around 11 and got that connected. with everything connected it still diddnt fire up so i thought maybe its just a fuse and sure enought it was 15amp srs/ ignition fuse in the cabin. such a simple fix that wound up taking me about 12 hours of unwrapping loom and tape, searching out every added wire for the swap, checking every connection that was spliced and the 5 seconds to look and see the fuse was popped. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. up and running again though i still have a cel (check my other post to see if you can help me out) i hope to be able to fix today.

im meeting up with another member today to get an ej22t harness in case something happens in the future i have a harness to do the correct way.

i really should have taken pics of the wiring before i fixed everything. some connections were just electrical taped together. im sure nate does better work (i really hope for the galants sake) but i think he was really just anxious to get the car running and then as soon as the car was up and running just never bothered cleaning it up.
