From what I remember, it's on the coolant crossover pipe (right underneath the intake manifold. You'll need a long extension on a socket wrench with a 12mm socket (I think).

To get to you have to go right between the throttle cable and cruise control cable.

Non Turbo

Post by northcoast »

I was just about to ask the same question. Mine is a non-turbo. I've been having random overheating issues and have been replacing items one at a time...the latest being the water pump. Coolant sensor is next. Haynes manual does not tell you where it is located.

On the '91-'94 turbo models there are 2 Coolant Temp sensors. One for your coolant temp gauge in your gauge cluster and the other for you ECU.

I would assume a non-turbo would use 2 sensors as well but I don't know for sure.

They are both located in the coolant cross-over pipe. Sort of underneath the throttle body.

northcoast, did you replace your thermostat when replacing your water pump? Does your radiator fan turn on?

Both the turbo and NA use two sensors. The one with the brown plug goes to the ECU and the one with the single spade connector goes to the instrument panel.

On a turbo car these sensors are located on the drivers side of the coolant crossover pipe. More or less under the throttle connections.

On a NA car these sensors are located on the passenger side of the coolant crossover pipe.

There is a thread, a few weeks old and me as the author, regarding the calibration of the ECU temp sensor. If you have a multi-meter and a stove it's pretty easy to check.
