HELP... What heads are these??

Post by smh0101 »

So I bought these heads... thinking they were 1993 WRX ej20g heads....

But they have different valve covers and are shimless cam over bucket heads...

Here are some pics... My friend David said there was no way they were 93 wrx heads.... He thinks they are ej20k heads.

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?

And I'd rather have these style heads... but I'm just curious what they're from.

They only have the turbo supply lines on the passenger side head... so they are single turbo heads.

Those are '93 WRX heads, as you were told. Those are the right covers.

Pull out a lifter and look under it. You will find the HLA's under there. They are actually attached to the bucket, but they are there.

No,
That second set is 1993 Legacy turbo Ej20G heads. See the little HLA in the hole off to the side? Those heads have the stub rockers of the 89-93 Legacy heads,

To pull the buckets, just grab one with your fingers and pull it straight out. If that doesn't work, tip it over on it's side. It will fall right out. You will want to remove them before you hot tank them anyways. Otherwise you risk getting water caught in there and having them rust.

They are not the same thing.

One is 1989-1993 Legacy Ej20 heads.

The other is 1993-1996 WRX Ej20 heads.

They are not both Impreza heads. They are two different generations of heads.

+1.

If you are still doubting compare the combustion chambers and the angles of the valves relative to the head gasket mating face.

The new set (the WRX set) have a much more relaxed valve angle and a combustion chamber that is a good +/-10cc smaller because the roof doesn't rise as high.

The old set (the Legacy set) has a really steep valve angle and pent roof. It's a giant 57cc combustion chamber.

If you compare the little details you will see that there are significant differences between the heads.

Oh okay... Awesome...

So should I be able to pull more power out of the WRX ones?

I'm guessing a higher Comp Ratio than the Legacy heads...

Yes,
Higher compression ratio. Also, the lifter design is better so you can rev them a little bit higher without issues.
