time to upgrade my upgrade - 92 ls 2.2e turbo to 2.2t

Post by bcmaxx »

now that I have this car running and driving with the td04 install , Its time to get a healthier more reliable bottom end in it. i got a low miler 2.2t turbo engine. plans are:
-tear down
-clean and paint block
- replace all gaskets seals, and valve seals
- new waterpump, oil pump, hoses, new oil pan, updated seperator plate
- any other suggestions while apart?

I plan to use the whole 2.2 na intake and pcv setup, wirring, just swap it onto this block.
the turbo block has extra pcv ports 2 on the head and one more on the top of the block, just curious wwhat to do with these, can I omit them like the non turbo block?
what is a safe boost level on this lower compression engine?

If your plan is to use the 2.2t block & heads, I'd use the PCV hoses. Or did I not understand what you're doing?

Thats correct. But was curios if i could just omit the two extra and run the non turbo valve covers. Two are baffled. Two or not.

I would recommend running the turbo valve cover gaskets. The extra PVC piping is meant to help equalize any pressure differences in the crank case and valve covers.

just need to install valve seals, and the heads can go back on. Doing a custom grill for in between little jobs and waiting for parts.

Ok so im ready to do the swap. En22t all ready. Maybe a silly question here: can i swap in the turbo ecu and turbo ecu maf ,turbo injectors and run it with the engine lamp until i can source the other required sensors? Or bad idea?

The car will not run right without the MAP sensor and other turbo related sensors. You need all the sensors and ECU for it to work properly.

OK, engine in and running....runs good, boosts amazing, pulls hard....but.....

i should have pulled it down and measured. I have a rap at startup, goes away after maybe a second or two max.. and an intermittent light down low resonant light knocking. I'm assuming the worst at this point ( rod bearing) looking for confirmation. I put in 500ml of lucas, the rattle on startup is now very faint and vanished, the light tapping noise is gone as soon as engine is up to temp. could it be anything else? I used oem head gaskets so I dont think its piston to head contact o0r anything like that. the engine was low km, came out of a perfectly running car.
in the meantime, I have ordered everything to rebuils my ej22e with 2.2t pistons.

If you are planning to rebuild another engine then I'd just drive this one until it gives you some further indication of failure. I'm not sure what else you can do.

figuring piston slap as it completely dissapears when engine is up to temp, also going to add a shim to the oil pump as was recommended as I have a sti pump, maybe not quite up to par with the oil squirters and hlas. everything has arrived for my 2.2e engine build. just curious on head gaskets, last ej22e i used stock non turbo gaskets and they help up great @16psi, not even sure if there is any other options.

just to update, noise is still there on startup, and can be heard until operating temp. then it goes away completely. hasn't gotten any worse, more noticable since installing stock exhaust :( , car has been daily driven between 11-20psi

ran her a lil hard lastnight on my way home, and shut it off pretty much right away, came out this morning, fired it up, and it puffed a blue cloud for about 5 seconds and went clear, catch cans all empty, no smoke in crank case, no other blue. this just some oil that got past the rings and had to burn off?

This is a relatively new/rebuilt motor correct?

If so you'll get a little bit of oil by the rings until things seat. I experienced this on my motor until I had a bit of miles on it.

so...... do to knocking noise, ( comes and goes) I'm throwing together a 2.2e with turbo pistons, until I can have the 22t torn down and send for machinework. question is which cams will suit the turbo best? turbo cams or na cams?

Turbo cams will suit the turbo motor better.

There is less valve overlap on the turbo cams.
