Scary Fast

Post by dzx »

I finally finished my FMIC and worked out most of the bugs i was having with it. I have to say there is a huge difference. Running at the same 12psi on the 16G that i was before, it pulls way harder. So hard that i get nervous just thinking about stepping on the gas pedal too hard. There is almost no lag as my pipes are pretty much straight to the intercooler in as short a distance as possible and not too many bends. To give an idea of how quick it is, with the mods done to it, it will pull on a stock wrx like its standing still I've never been scared of driving fast cars but i get butterfly's when the boost gets above 10psi on this car. I'll have some pics in the picture forum soon for those that are interested.

The intercooler piping wasnt that difficult when i finally got the time. First thing i did was move the battery to the trunk. I still had 2 guage wire run for my amp that got stolen so i just hooked it up to that and grounded the negative. Then i moved the horn and drilled a hole where it was just behind the headlight, same with the other side except did the coffee cup mod there with a little duct tape to help it out until i find something more permanent.

Oh yeh, the piping i used stainless steel with aluminum bends held together with silicone and clamped. I'll probably replace the aluminum bends cause they tended to bend a little when i clamped them. I would recommend using a wrench to tighten the clamps rather than a screw driver if you go this way. I found out that a screwdriver doesnt get it tight enough and kept blowing the pipes off the intercooler which was a real pita.

I'll second using a wrench instead of a screwdriver when tightening those style of clamps. When I replaced my radiator hoses, the lower one wasn't tight enough and it leaked...slowly... It took me a while to figure out why the hell my coolant reservoir was empty after a day or two driving around :(

Do you have any plans of dynoing your car or taking it to the track to see what times you pull?

I've got a friend who live in FOCO who might be interested in running. He doesn't repsect the old school that much in his 04 GTI. I think it would be a good race.

Fair enough. Yes indeed, 23 psi is a lot. He is leaning the shit out of his mixture. Can we say detonation?

I really need a straight pipe and a fmic.

What are the dimensions of the spearco core, and did you have to cut the bumper beam?

I removed the bumper beam. The intercooler was 3 inches thick 23 inches long and 8 inches high i think. Horn no longer works either cause i need to mount it somewhere. Also battery is now located in the trunk which helps with driving in the snow.
