My knock sensor appears to be failing. My check engine light blinks
on for a second or two every few days. When I check the code it
indicates a failure with the Knock Sensor.
I looked up the procedure for replacing it in my Haynes Repair Manual
(I know it's not the best), and it looks like it's a really big pain
to replace (remove intake manifold to get to it). I was wondering if
is really that hard? I guess the problem is that I don't know what
the sensor looks like. Is it located on the driver side rear of the
engine, and has one wire coming out of it with a bolt in the middle
of it (mine says 960 Japan A53-000 R00 on it)? Also the manual says
you have to drain the water out of the engine before replacing it.
I have a 1990 non-turbo Legacy with an automatic transmission.
Thanks for you help and advise.

Haynes is full of shit on their procedure. All you need is a socket and
a long extension. Unscrew for the block, unplug from the electrical
connector, and pull it out, and replace with new one.

Knock Sensor Problerm
as Josh mentioned, it's 'easy as' to replace, especially on a non turbo engine. I recently replaced mine (RS Liberty turbo) and had to remove intercooler to get to it. Simply unplug wire, use socket on extension and then R & R...
My car now boosts better and my economy is also better.. It has been an intermittent problem for over 6 months. Finally had enough of the constant error code coming up ( every 4 days ) and replaced it- should of done it heaps earlier.
cheers, Rod...in oz

Knock Sensor Problerm
Thanks Josh/Rod for the reply. I was wondering, from what I
described, did I find it? Also, I guess I don't have to worry about
draining the water from the system.
Maybe I should invest in a Subaru Shop manual?
Thanks for your help!

Knock Sensor Problerm
If you live near a winger subaru shop they can do it for $20, that's
if you can't be bothered doing it yourself.
