Coolant half green, half orange...

Post by alexandermf »

Saw one other thread on this but it turned out to be his water pump, my radiator and water pump are new within the last 6 months.

No symptoms of hg leak and my temp sensor is always right below middle, just noticed this within the last couple days

Drained my res, filled with transparent coolant to see how fast it shows back up... Next will be a full coolant flush

Open up your radiator cap and see if it is still green there. That does look crazy how it is divided like that though

I had a couple buddies say its usually a sign of rust with the rad or something but all of that is new for my car... Do I risk engine damage running with it like this?

I would flush the system and put fresh coolant in. As long as it is not oil you will be fine. Oil will cause the rubber hoses to swell and weaken. I drove around with a leaking water oil cooler and had no real effects on the engine besides the rubber hoses going bad.

Thanks for quick response and good advice! I will be flushing it next weekend. Interested to see if there will be more orange in the rest of the system. Kinda interesting that the orange part in my res is next to battery

The coolant in the resevoir bottle can sometimes turn odd colors around the top. I've seen it before, but probably can't hurt to flush the system.
